Television news personality Katie Couric should have been spending her time on a beach somewhere on Monday (June 10,) sipping champagne and celebrating her 30thwedding anniversary with the love of her life.

Unfortunately, fate would have other plans.

As many fans recall, the former Today show anchor’s first husband Jay Monahan died back in 1998 at the age of 42 of colon cancer. And while Couric has moved on with her life having married John Molner back in 2014, her thoughts often turn to what might have been.

“Dear Jay…It’s June 10th 2019 and today would have been our 30th anniversary,” she wrote on her Instagram page on Monday (June 10) alongside a picture of her and Jay on their wedding day. “I hope you would be proud of the way I’ve lived my life and know you’d be proud of your girls who have grown into incredible young women.”

In the post, she also reflected on her new love.

“I think you would like John Molner, who honors your memory and knows there is room in my heart for you both,” she wrote sweetly. “With love, me. PS I’m glad they didn’t let you escape in that last photo! And sorry for the pouffy hat.. I was trying to look ”jaunty.”

For Couric, cancer has come to take a number of loved ones away from her throughout the years.

“I lost my sister to pancreatic cancer 17 years ago,” she told Parade magazine in an interview earlier this year. “I lost my mom in 2014 and my dad in 2011. I miss every one of those people. It’s really hard and still painful. Grief is kind of on a continuum, and someone describes it as having a rock in your pocket. It’s always there, you just sometimes don’t notice it as much.”
