Pop singer Katy Perry’s shoe designs from her Katy Perry Collections have come under fire for resembling ‘blackface.”

The shoes designed by the singer are slip on shoes that have eyes, a nose and lips plastered on the front of the shoe. And as most shoes do, they come in different colors— from tan to black.

Cue the social media bandwagon. The black shoe, with a face on it, faced backlash from social media, calling the shoe racist.

Since the backlash ensued recently, even though the shoes came out last summer, Katy and Global Brands Group issued an apology statement explaining how they are saddened by backlash and that the shoes were being pulled from the shelves.

“The Rue and The Ora were part of a collection that was released last summer in 9 different colorways (black, blue, gold, graphite, lead, nude, pink, red, silver) and envisioned as a nod to modern art and surrealism,” the statement to The Hollywood Reporter said.

“I was saddened when it was brought to my attention that it was being compared to painful images reminiscent of blackface. Our intention was never to inflict any pain. We have immediately removed them from Katy Perry Collections.”

While many called the shoe racist, more fans came to the singers defense.

“If you see racism or blackface on these shoes let me tell you that you need mental help,” write @madMajima. “And I’m completely sure that people would complain if the shoes didn’t have a black version!!. Stop complaining about everything, damn it!!. Grow up!!”

“If you are being traumatized by shoes you need to be in a mental institution. Who cares about these shoes? They’re ugly.  said @chadwick_el.

“Alleging “blackface” over these silly SHOES minimizes the true threat of malicious racist acts worldwide. Next!,” said @everenperry.

“I can’t believe Katy Perry let y’all punk her out those ugly shoes lmao. They weren’t even black face,” @_Tenderoni wrote.

And there is plenty more where that came from.
