When the almighty Madonna walked out on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to present “Video of the Year,” she proceeded to share some anecdotes about just how the late Aretha Franklin ‘changed the course’ of her life.

“None of this would have happened without our lady of soul,” she told the crowd. “She led me where I am today… I want to thank you Aretha for empowering all of us… Long live the queen.”

However, in social media land, many took offense to Madonna’s commentary, saying that it should have been more of a tribute to Franklin than simply about the singer’s influence on Madonna’s life.

Yet, in true Madonna fashion, she is in fact getting the last word.

“Just to clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV,” Madonna wrote on her Instagram page on Tuesday (Aug. 21.) “And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin. I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment. Unfortunately, most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge,” she wrote. “I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T.”
