Mariah Carey has always caused quite a splash thanks to her good looks and big vocals. But the musical giant found out Wednesday (May 1) that just the smallest of her gestures can also get the whole world talking.
Donning a skin tight black sequined dress, Carey was on hand at the Billboard Music Awards to accept the Icon Award. And as she walked across the stage to grab her trophy from presenter Jennifer Hudson, she blotted her shiny face, and then quickly threw the tissue across the stage.
But while some may find it easy to make fun of some of her actions, there is no doubt that New York native has had to fight many a hurdle to get to this point of her career.
“I started making music out of a necessity to survive and to express myself,” she said. “I just wanted to create something so I could feel worthy of existing. If I’ve learned anything at all in this life is that truly all things are possible with God.”
Mariah continued, “I guess I’ve always felt like an outsider, someone who doesn’t belong anywhere. I still feel like that lost interracial child who had a lot of nerve to believe I could succeed at anything in this world…but I did believe because I had to. The truth is I’ve dedicated my life to my music, my saving grace, and to my fans who are unlike any other entity that I’ve ever known. They’ve lifted me out of the depths of hell and brought me back with their devotion and love.”

Later in the speech, she added “to anybody who doesn’t allow themselves to be broken and keeps getting up and keeps holding on and keeps standing tall, keeps on believing and keeps rising: I celebrate you tonight. And to anyone whose ever told me that a song I wrote helped save your life, I thank you, because you saved mine and I’ll be eternally grateful for that. I love you.”
Before the speech, Carey had the audience on their feet thanks to her performance of a medley of her biggest hits, including “Hero,” “We Belong Together” and “Always Be My Baby.”
