The teacher and student that made headlines in the late 90s’ for their sexual relationship are calling it quits…again. Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau tried to make their marriage work, after splitting in 2017, but to no avail. According to People, the couple is ending their relationship

In 1997 Mary Kay plead guilty to two counts of felony second-degree rape of a child, after having an affair with her student Vili. Mary Kay was a sixth grade teacher and Vili, her 12 year old student when the affair began.  She was sentenced to more than 7 years in prison and is a registered sex offender in Washington state, according to the magazine.

After Mary Kay was released from prison in 2004, she and Vili resumed their relationship and married in 2005. The couple share two children, both born before she completed her 7 year stint in prison.

Vili filed for separation in 2017, but the couple did not go through with the divorce, trying to reconcile and make their marriage work. But their time has come to an end and Vili and Mary Kay filed in King County Superior Court to movie forward with private arbitration and finalize the divorce.

A source tells People, “They really gave it the old college try. They have a long history with two kids, but it really seems to have run its course. They worked really hard to fix things, but it still fell apart. The reconciliation just didn’t work. They still love each other very much. They’re family and always will be. It just isn’t working, and they’re going to have to call it.”

Vili is 35 and Mary Kay is 57.
