Though we know and love her as Kate Pearson on “This Is Us,” Chrissy Metz is taking on a new role as a mother with an unwavering faith in the new film, “Breakthrough.”
Based on a true story, the film recalls the event of a mother, Joyce Smith (played by Metz) whose adopted son, John, falls through an icy lake at the age of 14, leaving him trapped underwater for 15 minutes.
In the new trailer for the film, we see Chrissy’s standing over her son’s body as he was without a heartbeat for 45 minutes, asking God to send his Holy Spirit to bring her son back to life. Suddenly, his heartbeat returns, leaving her to cling to hope and rely on the prayers of their community as she and her husband Brian hope for a full recovery for their son.
In an interview with People, Chrissy said playing the role of a character based on a real-life person was a new challenge for her. “To play a real person is very different than creating your own character,” she said. “There’s all this pressure, like I want to tell the story appropriately and I want to do it justice.”
Chrissy also shared that the real-life Joyce gave the movie two thumbs up.
“It’s really intimidating because you do want them to feel good about [your performance]. Obviously, nothing is going to be perfect, but you want them to feel like you captured their essence, that was my objective,” she said. “It was definitely challenging, it’s very emotional and there’s a lot going on. I heard [Smith] is very happy, phew, thank goodness. But it was very, very challenging, mentally.”
“Breakthrough” will premiere Easter of 2019.
