NASCAR Community Mourns the Loss of Racing Great Jason Johnson

It’s a fact of life for any racer that danger can find them around every corner. Yet, when World of Outlaws sprint car driver Jason Johnson was going for the lead Saturday (June 23) going into turn one of Beaver Dam Raceway in Wisconsin, God knows he wasn’t thinking about that sad reality.

He was thinking about going for the win.

Unfortunately, the 41-year-old lost his life in that racing pursuit, flipping his race car violently in the air before landing outside the track. His death was announced by his race team early Sunday morning.

“With the same courage, passion, and vigor that he raced with each night, he fought valiantly to the end,” Jason Johnson Racing said in a statement. “His love of life and sprint car racing was only surpassed by his deep and authentic love for his family, friends, competitors, and fans. He never met a stranger, and certainly never met anyone that he was not willing to help or provide guidance. It is that giving and caring spirit that we will all forever miss.”

Soon after the news broke of Johnson’s tragic death, stars from the NASCAR world began to share their sadness over their socials, with everyone from past competitors Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kenny Wallace to current racers Kyle Busch, Ty Dillon and Kyle Larson expressing their disbelief.

We send our heartfelt condolences to all those mourning the death of Jason Johnson.
