Now that “This Is Us” is entering its third season, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Milo Ventimiglia playing our beloved and revered Jack Pearson— but, as it turns out, Oliver Hudson was SUPER close to playing the part.

In an interview on Entertainment Tonight’s LadyGang Podcast, Hudson shared that he nailed his initial audition for the part, but couldn’t make it to a chemistry read with Mandy Moore because…well, he had to fish.

“I went in and read and it went very well,” Hudson told ET. “They wanted me to come and do a chemistry read with Mandy Moore, but this will tell you how much I love to fish. I had a 10-day fishing trip planned, and it’s my life. Fishing is a big part of my life and it was this 10-day fishing trip.”

He said his agent encouraged him to go to the reading, but Hudson couldn’t pass up his trip.

“My agent said, ‘We got a test. They really like you,’ and I said, ‘Ooh, I’m supposed to be going on a fishing trip.’ He’s like, ‘OK. So? This is a big thing.’ And I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to do my fishing trip.’”

Of course, he said he had a little “Oh, shit” moment when he saw how good the ratings were from the show. “I rarely like anything, but I read it and I was like, ‘This is really good,’” he said. “I thought it was very well written and new and a little different. Interesting.”

Can you even imagine what the show would’ve been like without Milo? We shudder at the very thought.
