Now that “This Is Us” is entering its third season, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Milo Ventimiglia playing our beloved and revered Jack Pearson— but, as it turns out, Oliver Hudson was SUPER close to playing the part.
In an interview on Entertainment Tonight’s LadyGang Podcast, Hudson shared that he nailed his initial audition for the part, but couldn’t make it to a chemistry read with Mandy Moore because…well, he had to fish.
“I went in and read and it went very well,” Hudson told ET. “They wanted me to come and do a chemistry read with Mandy Moore, but this will tell you how much I love to fish. I had a 10-day fishing trip planned, and it’s my life. Fishing is a big part of my life and it was this 10-day fishing trip.”

Another amazing trip on @excelsportfishing Tipping the scales at 260 putting up a 3 hour battle.. And for those of you who are gonna write "murderer" and "you're killing our ocean" please get your facts straight.. Your soy cheese and tempeh farts are causing more damage to this planet than recreational fisherman.. True anglers are true conservationists.. Hudson out.. @okumafishingtackle
He said his agent encouraged him to go to the reading, but Hudson couldn’t pass up his trip.
“My agent said, ‘We got a test. They really like you,’ and I said, ‘Ooh, I’m supposed to be going on a fishing trip.’ He’s like, ‘OK. So? This is a big thing.’ And I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to do my fishing trip.’”
Of course, he said he had a little “Oh, shit” moment when he saw how good the ratings were from the show. “I rarely like anything, but I read it and I was like, ‘This is really good,’” he said. “I thought it was very well written and new and a little different. Interesting.”
Can you even imagine what the show would’ve been like without Milo? We shudder at the very thought.
