In what has already been a tumultuous year for actor Robert De Niro comes news that he has split from his wife Grace Hightower after 20 years of marriage. According to People magazine, sources say that the two are currently separated and living apart at this time.

“Sometimes things don’t work out the way you hope or want them to,” a source close to the situation tells the magazine.

The news comes following a tumultuous year for the actor, who is best known for his work in iconic movies such as Taxi Driver, The Godfather and Casino. Earlier this year, De Niro made news when he publically criticized President Donald Trump. He also was the recipient of a mail bomb last month.

The couple themselves have also had quite a rocky relationship. Married in 1997, the two split briefly in 1999 when De Niro attempted to file for divorce. A harsh custody battle followed. Yet, the divorce never went through. The couple renewed their vows in 2004, and share two children together – 20-year-old son Elliott and 6-year-old daughter Helen Grace.
