Sean Payton revealed some news that New Orleans Saints fans might not be too thrilled to hear. In an interview with the ESPN show Get Up, the New Orleans Saints coach revealed that the 2020 NFL season will be quarterback Drew Brees’ last.
“The unique situation with our team and with our quarterback, Drew Brees, is he’s announced he’s coming back for his final season,” said Sean. He then went on to mention that backup quarterback Taysom Hill will be stepping up to fill Drew’s shoes.
“I think Taysom (Hill) sees himself as being starting quarterback in this league and we do too.”

Following the 2019 season, which saw the Saint’s end the year with a 13-3 record, losing in the NFC Championship to the Los Angeles Rams, Drew was contemplating his career moves.
“I have never been in the situation where I was mulling over the thought of [returning],” Brees said in an interview with Jane Slater of the NFL Network. “To me, each one of these contracts, I don’t know how many it’s been with the Saints, I’ve played with them 14 years, it’s not a matter of if it gets done, it’s when. At this stage of my career, it’s not a given that I’m coming back every year, but when that time comes, I’ll always be a Saint.”

Saints fans are indeed happy to hear that the championship quarterback will return for the 2020 season, which Drew himself confirmed, but as for the 2021 season, they may be left without Drew. Keep in mind, Drew did sign a two-year contract extension last month with the Saints, but according to Saintswire, the contract does allow him to retire after the 2020 season.
No word from Drew on 2020 being his final season. But it did come directly from coach Sean Payton. We can only hope Drew will change his mind after the 2020 season ends. Only time will tell. Good luck Saints fans.
