It’s hard to find a person in America not extremely proud of where they come from (especially if you’re from anywhere in the South or Texas). We love wearing shirts with the outline of our state on them, talking about our hometowns with nostalgia and we especially love songs talking about where we come from. Why? They are relatable and if Johnny Cash or Bruce Springsteen is singing about your birthplace, why wouldn’t you love it?
Some states have a number of songs proclaiming greatness (especially Texas, New Jersey, California and Tennessee). But, just what is the best song about your state? And let’s be honest, some songs about some states aren’t really worth listening to, which is unfortunate because I would love a good song about Iowa to really take over the airwaves.
As an aside: without an incredibly thorough search, it does seem that Johnny Cash and Patty Griffin have each recorded a song about each individual state (and Puerto Rico).
