Top Chef star Fatima Ali passed away Friday, Jan. 25 after battling cancer. The 29-year-old had recently updated fans of her condition earlier this month with a post on Instagram.

“I know it’s been ages since I posted and most may have figured out why,” she wrote alongside a picture of her looking quite frail, further indicating that Ewing’s Sarcoma is slowly overtaking her body. “I’m sick and unfortunately I’m getting sicker. Right now all I need are prayers; prayers that are simple.”

In 2017, Fatima was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a bone cancer. And while she fought cancer and thought that it was going to go into remission, she began to experience pain again last July and found out that the cancer had returned. In October, she revealed that she was given one year to live.

“My doctors sat us and down, and they were like, ‘Look the cancer is back, it’s metastasized. The chemo has not worked,’” she recalls. “I looked at my doctor and I was like, ‘Tell me straight. How long do I have? He was like, ‘A year.’ It’s crazy. But life is crazy.”

Unfortunately, Fatima succumbed to the disease only three months later.

Top Chef Alum, Bruce Kalman took to social media to say goodbye to his friend.

“It’s with a heavy heart we say goodbye to Fatima Ali today, as she has lost her battle with cancer. I will miss you Fati, and you will be in my heart forever. I’ll always remember the great times we had, especially our interview during the tailgating episode discussing football, stadiums, and Taylor Swift. Much love, Bruce😘 #fuckcancer #cheffati #topchef#friends #family #itsnotfair,” he wrote.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Fatima’s family and friends at this difficult time.
