“Rest in Peace Naya,” the rapper wrote in an Instagram post on Friday (July 17.) “God Bless your Soul! Thank you for blessing us all with your talent and presence. you are a hero! Not just because of how you saved your son, also because of the barriers you knocked down for so many people to make them feel confident in themselves and to stand tall and be proud when they couldn’t achieve that on their own.”

According to Entertainment Tonight, Big Sean began dating Rivera back in April of 2013. The couple got engaged that October, but then broke things off in 2014. And while the two never got to see the end of their fairytale, Sean wrote that he appreciated the growth that came from their breakup.

“I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person,” Big Sean wrote alongside two pictures of his former love. “I’m still grieving and in shock, I can’t believe this is real. I’m praying for you and your family and I know your watching over them and protecting them.”

Indeed, the shock over Rivera’s death continues its ripple affect across the country. Rivera was found dead on July 13 after going on a boating excursion with her 4-year-old son just a week earlier.

“We know that she was out with her 4-year-old boy and she was swimming,” search organizer Captain Jeremy Paris told Entertainment Tonight. “We know he was wearing a life vest and she wasn’t. We know that she was able to, and she did, assist him onto the boat. And then for some unknown reason–and I don’t think we will ever know–she was not able to get on the boat herself.”
