Caleb Lee Hutchinson is a green musician. He is mostly untested and untrained. The upside is that we can already see growth in his performances on the rebooted season of “American Idol.” The downside is that once the crowd started cheering, he forgot to focus on his performance.
The judges roundly praised Hutchinson’s performance but questioned his song choice. He really didn’t do himself any favors trying to match Chris Stapleton‘s “Midnight Train to Memphis,” a rowdy, no holds-barred prison ballad. That does seem out of his wheelhouse, even though it gets the girls screaming.
You could see Hutchinson enjoying the attention, but that took him out of the song. It is a mistake of youth, but one we can’t blame him for. He’s young, and any one of us would have done the same thing.
