If ever the world needed some inspirational words, it is now. And Lionel Richie and his American Idol counterparts just gave some to the world.

On the season finale of American Idol on Sunday (May 17,) Richie brought together an all-star lineup of stars from the singing competition to sing his 1985 classic “We are The World.” Fans will recall that the inspiring song, which was originally put together to highlight the ongoing famine in Africa, was written by Richie and the late Michael Jackson.

In the new version of the song, fellow American Idol judges Luke Perry and Katy Perry join Richie in the singing of the song, which was recorded while each of the stars following social distancing procedures in light of the continuing spread of the coronavirus. This year’s winner Just Sam even got in on the fun.

But what made this rendition even cooler was the fact that it served as the perfect excuse to bring together some American Idol favorites of the past who have gone on to make quite the careers for themselves, including stars such as Gabby Barrett, Jordin Sparks, Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Lauren Alaina, Phillip Phillips, Ruben Studdard and Scotty McCreery.

And if the lyrics of the song weren’t emotional enough, each of the star’s faces were super imposed on some of the nation’s most famous landmarks, now empty due to the pandemic, in the accompanying music video.
