On the Wednesday (Feb. 27) episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the talk show host shared a precious video of her wife Portia de Rossi on a recent trip to Rwanda for the groundbreaking ceremony of The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
“A couple of weeks ago, my wife Portia went to Rwanda,” DeGeneres told the audience about her 60th birthday present. “She was there for the groundbreaking ceremony for my campus we are building for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to help the mountain gorillas and it was an incredible experience. I want to show you more of what happened because it’s amazing.”
In the video, de Rossi can not only be seen on safari watching the gorillas in their natural element, but also be seen speaking at the ceremony about the importance of this gift to her wife of 11 years.
“This whole thing came about because I thought what on earth do you give the woman who has everything,” she told the crowd assembled at the ceremony. “I thought the best gift I could give her was a way to connect her past and future.”
She added, “This campus isn’t for me or Ellen. It’s for the people of Rwanda. It is my hope that the campus will serve as the catalyst to encourage us to dream bigger and to know that we too can make an impact, that all of us can become trailblazers just like Ellen and Dian.”
After the video aired, the crowd in the studio gave DeGeneres a standing ovation.
