Seven years after the death of music icon Whitney Houston in 2012, her best friend, Robyn Crawford, is speaking out about the relationship she shared with the singer.

In an exclusive interview with TODAY, Robyn revealed that the two shared a romantic relationship when they first met, before Whitney became a star.

“Our friendship was a deep friendship. In the early part of that friendship, it was physical,” she told Craig Melvin of Today. “It was during that first summer that we met was the first time our lips touched. It wasn’t anything planed. It just happened and it felt wonderful. Then not long after that we spent the night together and that evening was the night that we touched. That just brought us closer.”

“We were intimate on many levels. And all I can say is that it was very deep, and we were very connected,” she added.

But as the two were buidling a career in the music business for Whitney, the singer put an end to the relationship.

“She said, ‘I don’t believe we should be physical anymore,’ recalled Robyn. “The music business was a world that we were learning and we didn’t want anything to interfere with where she was going,”

When asked if she was upset about the end, Robyn said, “I just felt I wouldn’t be losing much. I still loved her the same and she loved me. And that was good enough.”

Robyn also revealed why she wanted to share her story now, so many years later.

“I never envisioned speaking publicly about my life,” Robyn said. “Then I asked myself the question, ‘what would Whitney want?’ Would she understand the time is now?”
