No ice skater had ever landed a clean quad lutz, a backward facing leap with four complete spins, in Olympic history until today. American Vincent Zhou opened his figure skating routine with the element. What’s more, this is Zhou’s first Olympics and he is only 17.

In less than one second Zhou spun four complete rotations, landed on a single blade only 4mm thick with five times the force of his bodyweight then immediately relaunched into triple toe loop.

The unbelievable feat gave Zhou the highest score of his career, 84.53, making him the early front-runner of the men’s competition.
