Joking that he took a break from one trio to record a song with a “trio of dudes,” Charles Kelley sat backstage at “The Tonight Show” to share the story of how he wrote “The Driver.”

Kelley had the idea for almost a year before pairing up with Eric Paslay and Abe Stoklasa to finish writing it. Dierks Bentley is also featured on the tune and getting him involved was a little bit tougher– it took a trip to the beach and maybe a little bit of begging.

With his new solo project, Kelley explores new territory with a raw sound that pushes his vocals into a lower, grittier key than what listeners have been hearing from him in a group setting. His unmatched perspective of hours spent on the road pursuing a life-long dream is present through his impeccable voice and desire to push himself out of his comfort zone.
