Kacey Musgraves is all about claiming she isn’t cut out for the life of a beauty pageant contestant on her latest album, Pageant Material, and we finally know why.

During an interview with the Detroit News, Kacey shared the story of her failed try for the title of Little Miss Tater Tot, “I did one when I was 3 or 4. In our town, we have this sweet potato festival every year, and every year they crown the Sweet Potato Queen, and the little girls get to be Little Miss Tater Tot. So I tried out. I wanted to be her so bad, and I lost miserably, and that was the last pageant I was ever in.”

Lucky break for country music fans everywhere as Kacey decided to pursue music instead of pageantry. Pageant Material is up for CMA Album of the Year and she’s now vying for the crown of Female Vocalist of the Year, too.

It’s no surprise that the album was nominated for top prize at this year’s CMA Awards, as fans and critics alike claim it’s one of the most “country” albums out today. Kacey agrees without really agreeing when giving her take on country music today.

“I love country music, and I feel like these days in country music, it’s kind of rare for the really country music boundary to be pushed. Country music sometimes isn’t super country these days. I just love traditional country music so much, and putting my younger fresh take on it. That’s how I roll.”

Hopefully, she’ll keep on rolling along.

Kacey is currently on tour through the fall.
